Now entering its 6 year the Practical Surveying Course attracts delegates from all over the world. With 2 tutors on the course and a maximum of 8 delegates intensive practical tuition is ensured. Most of this takes place out of the classroom aboard a large variety of boats under actual survey conditions. If you have the appropriate background this course bridges the gap between the study of theory and actually starting work and in that respect it is unique in the world. Many new surveyors qualify by following distance learning courses with a minimum of quality practical tuition but the IBTC course offers more practical experience in identifying and quantifying defects than may be gleaned in 5 years of normal practice. This is achieved by inspecting a large number of vessels made possible through the excellent relations the College enjoys with major players in the marine industry, both in pleasure and small commercial vessels, throughout East Anglia. Of course preparing a factual survey report which is fit for purpose is as important as the survey itself and this is also taught in a structured manageable manner as the course progresses.
Delegates are encouraged to become student members of the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association upon registration and those who successfully pass the course are entitled to one years free membership of the YDSA at graduate level. Those who display the appropriate ability will be able to upgrade to Affiliate level very quickly and past delegates have gone on to achieve the coveted Accredited level within 18 months. For details of membership and entitlements of the grades please see www.ydsa.co.uk There are currently 3 surveyors who took their first steps in the industry via the IBTC course sitting on the YDSA committee. Successful graduates from the course are also fully supported by their own surveyor organisation started by successful delegates in 2007, British Marine Surveyors Europe, www.bmse.co.uk This is a small but dynamic group with the most active private small craft surveyor forum in the world where information is freely exchanged between members. Less experienced surveyors can post queries with photos and get immediate help on any topic, whilst the more experienced make sure new developments are shared with more recent members. In this way service to the public and industry by IBTC trained BMSE surveyors is constantly enhanced and a considerable contribution to the surveyor’s Continuing Professional Development is achieved. For more details please see www.ibtc.co.uk I am also happy to discuss the course so please feel free to email or phone me.
What past Delegates say about the course:
“There are plenty of courses teaching the theory of surveying but very few that give you the practical knowledge. This course offers 4 weeks of intense hands-on surveying in which you will practice the techniques of the trade and see a range of problems that it would take you years to find on the job. Having been surveying for a few years I cannot see how I would have done it without the benefit of this excellent course”.
“I studied on the IBTC course and gained a valuable insight into the techniques and disciplines necessary to begin practice as a Yacht surveyor. Since completing the course I have successfully carried out many surveys for pre purchase, insurance condition and insurance damage. I can thoroughly recommend the course to anyone wishing to put their experience and knowledge to use and start practicing as a surveyor”
"Having completed the Practical Yacht and Small Boat Surveying course at the International Boatbuilding Training College in Lowestoft in 2010, I would like to share my experience nearly one year on to those that may consider taking the course. Firstly, I found the course extremely informative, packed full of practical sessions and a ‘hands on’ approach was applied throughout the course. I also found the course tutors incredibly knowledgeable and who were able to retain a great atmosphere in which to digest a considerable amount of information! Nearly one year on I have now conducted in excess of twenty surveys and the most important point I would like to share with anyone considering taking the course is the back-up that follows on completion. Expert surveyors including tutors from the course are collectively willing to share their wealth of knowledge via the BMSE (British Marine Surveyors Europe) which is available to those successfully completing the course and in my opinion this is quite simply priceless to anyone considering Yacht & Small Craft Surveying."
