In recent years I have developed a unique Practical Surveying Course at the International Boatbuilding Training College in Lowestoft, which has been endorsed by the YDSA and is attracting delegates from the world over. The course is not classroom based, the training centres around a variety of pre-selected real boats under actual survey conditions. The course is most suited to individuals who have some knowledge of yachts and small craft wishing to increase their practical experience and it provides a clear career path bridging the gap between the study of theory and actually commencing survey work, which in the past has been a difficult transition. The course centres around production FRP vessels from about 25' to 40', plus steel vessels in a similar size range and is primarily designed to demonstrate and teach the investigative and recognition techniques required to identify defects within a Pre-Purchase Survey context, then to adequately describe and quantify these in a survey report. The numbers on the courses are restricted to ensure a minimum ratio of 1 tutor to 4 delegates. T he practical training is supported by written modules and practical “how to” guides covering all aspects of the survey process. These are profusely illustrated with actual defects to aid detection and recognition. There is also a recommended reading list. The modules are available at time of registration and ideally should be studied some months prior to the course although this will depend on the delegate's previous experience. Spring Summer and Autumn courses are held and the full prospectus can be seen at www.ibtc.co.uk
